Speaker: Nadja Buttendorf

Nadja Buttendorf (born 1984 in Dresden) is a visual artist based in Berlin. She is currently working on a web series on the history of computer development in the GDR.
Nadja studied fine art at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy, Halle (Diploma 2012). Nadja Buttendorf exhibits worldwide and is a founding member of the Cyborgs e.V. Berlin.

Buttendorf's work combines areas of online culture and technology history. With videos, workshops, objects and online interventions Buttendorf investigates questions around identity and gender constructions. How are gender stereotypes reproduced in the digital world and how can a different approach to technology look like that does not follow a deterministic logic of high-tech?

In various current works, Buttendorf traces the history of computer development in the GDR, starting from her own family history. The development of technologies dependent on the respective social systems will be worked out to add a more diverse and complex story to a successful US-American narrative.
