Jaromil
Jaromil is a Mediterranean gypsy of relevant geekness. Inspired by the “Free Software” empowering philosophy, seeks to cross borders between art, code and social activism, often focusing on recycling of technology and it’s accessibility. Past projects include the dyne:bolic distribution and RASTASOFT, past speeches focused on privacy issues, freedom of speech and independent media. Jaromil won the Vilém Flusser Award at Transmediale (Berlin, 2009) and the Ben Watson's quiz at Zappanale (Bad Doberan, 2007)
Online since 1991 (BBS CyberNet 65:1500/3.13) co-founded in 1994 the Italian non-profit association Metro Olografix for the diffusion of telematic cultures, and in 2000 the dyne.org software foundry to create software for the freedom of expression, to let people communicate free from capitalist speculations and the need of expensive hardware.
RASTASOFT software includes HasciiCam (ascii video streaming), MuSE (for running a web radio), FreeJ (for veejay and realtime video manipulation) and dyne:bolic GNU/Linux the bootable CD running directly without requiring installation, a popular swiss army knife in the fields of production and broadcasting of information.
Jaromil is a featured artist in CODeDOC II (Whitney Museum Artport), Read_Me 2.3 (runme.org software art), Negotiations 2003 (Toronto CA), I LOVE YOU (MAK Frankfurt), Netarts (Machida Tokyo), Rhizome, Data Browser 02 (engineering culture), Crosstalks (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and in several other publications.
